Born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Alexa Dirks draws inspiration from the vast prairie space around her. Having grown up in a tight-knit family full of humour, deep-fried dough and watermelon, Alexa is a social extrovert who eats good laughs for breakfast. Starting as a backup vocalist for other touring artists at the age of 17, Alexa now works with some of the most respected musicians in Winnipeg’s musical community. Her husky, powerful voice, instinctive sense of melody and harmony, imbue every one of her vocal performances with breathtaking abandon. Influenced by many a master tunesmith, notably Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder and Andrew Bird, Alexa’s mature songwriting reflects her life almost literally at times… Songs of longing, of woe, most about love and trying to articulate life as a twenty something on the road and in the windy city where she finds her heart and home. When not touring with Chic Gamine, Alexa can be seen fronting some of Winnipeg’s most in demand bands (the new lightweights, little boy boom) and wearing floral-print dresses, surreptitiously stolen from her grandmothers’ closet.
